Medias, Sighisoara

Alltag ist wieder eingekehrt in Sibiu. Einige meiner Kollegen sind die letzten Tage im Urlaub gewesen, so dass es im Büro ruhig zuging. Leider liegt immer noch kein Schnee, hoffentlich kommt der bald. Dafür ist es meistens sonnig, aber doch recht kalt. Insgesamt lässt es sich wirklich aushalten. Der Piata Mare im Stadtzentrum wird immer schöner, und selbst die Einwohner können es kaum erwarten, bis alle Bauarbeiten beendet sind.
Überhaupt habe ich es ja bis heute nicht geschafft, ins Brukenthal-Museum zu gehen und mir ein paar Gemälde anzuschauen. Und das obwohl ich schon seit Oktober hier bin... Beim letzten Versuch kam ein Stromausfall dazwischen. Viel wichtiger ist ja auf der anderen Seite zu wissen, wo man ein schönes schwarzes Bier trinken kann. Und genau deswegen mache ich hier mal Schleichwerbung: Im Studentenklub ‚Crama’ (heißt auf deutsch so was wie Weinkeller) direkt neben der Lügenbrücke gibt es nicht nur gutes ‚Silva Black’, sondern auch (zumindest im Winter) guten Glühwein und Brot mit einer Art Schmand. Alles nicht wirklich teuer und sehr lecker.
Zum Glück hatte ich am Sonntag mal frei und konnte wieder etwas Rumänisch lernen. War irgendwie viel zu faul und habe das die letzte Zeit leider etwas schleifen lassen :-( Am Samstag dann ging es in ein typisch siebenbürgisches Städtchen: Sighishoara, zu deutsch Schässburg. Simone, Alina, Horia und meine Wenigkeit schnappten uns gleich am Morgen den erstbesten ‚Personal’, und vorbei ging es an friedlichen Wiesen, Feldern, einigen Häusern... und Copsa Mica. Ich finde einfach, an dieser Stelle muss es erwähnt werden: Rumänien hat auch richtig schlechte, hässliche Seiten. Simone und ich haben uns fast die Nase am Zugfenster plattgedrückt: denn wir sahen eine – wenn nicht die – am meistverschmutzte Gegend Rumäniens bzw. Europas. Was in Zeiten des Kommunismus in dem großen Industrieareal produziert wurde, weiß ich bis heute nicht. Einige sagen Kautschuk, andere Buntmetall – laut Wikipedia wurde auch Ruß hergestellt. Jedenfalls setzte man soviel Abgase in die Luft, dass noch heute Bäume Probleme haben, auf den nahe gelegenen Hügeln zu wachsen und die Dächer der Häußer von Ruß geschwärzt sind. Auch die Bevölkerung leidet an den Folgen dieser unglaublichen Umweltverschmutzung, einige Krankheiten treten natürlich in dieser Gegend häufiger auf. Kaum zu glauben, dass heute in der Nähe der Fabrik noch Menschen leben und selbst Teile des Areals in Betrieb sind. Dazu habe ich auch einen schon älteren Artikel (Online) der ‚Hermannstädter Zeitung’ gefunden. Diese erscheint wöchentlich in Sibiu und richtet sich an die deutsche Minderheit. Zum Abonnenten bin ich nicht geworden, die Berichte sind aber qualitativ hochwertig. Sowieseo ist es schwierig, englisch- oder deutschsprachige Zeitungen zu finden. Die meisten Informationen bekomme ich aus dem Internet.
Auf der anderen Seite sind Medias (das kleine Sibiu) und auch Schässburg recht hübsche Städte. Nicht nur wegen der evangelischen Kirche erinnert der Geburtsort von Rares (wir mussten in Medias umsteigen) an Hermannstadt - es gibt auch viele Kirchen und Teile der Verteidigungsanlage sind zu besichtigen. Sighisoare soll im Sommer noch besser sein, wenn alles etwas grüner ist und junge Leute zu einem Musikfestival zusammenkommen. Eine mittelalterliche Stadt, verwinkelte Gassen, der Stundturm mit seinem Uhrwerk und den dazugehörigen Figuren – alles malerisch und ruhig. In dieser Jahreszeit gibt es zum Glück wenig Tourismus. Alles in allem ein schöner Ausflug, und es ist schon recht lustig, wenn man in einem gemütlichen Cafe sitzt, in dem eigentlich nichts mehr an Rumänien erinnert – und am Fenster ziehen plötzlich zwei Pferdewagen mit Holz als Baumaterial vorbei. Genau, noch bin ich da und noch habe ich etwas Zeit.

Everyday’s life again in Sibiu... A few of my colleagues had holiday the last days, and so it was very nice to work in an empty office and on different tasks. No hectic, silence – I liked it. Unfortunately also today there isn’t any snow, cold temperatures but sunny. It’s okay for me, better than Siberia I think. Piata Mare (the big square in the city center) looks more and more beautiful, and also the citizens of Sibiu can’t expect that every construction site will disappear some day. Hopefully before 2007 :-)
At all, until now I couldn’t manage it to go into Brukenthal Museum. The last time I tried this, it was closed because of a loss of power. Hopefully I’ll have more luck within the next weeks. More important, anyway, is to know nice places for going out in the evenings. And for this reason, I recommend ‘Crama’. In Englisch ‘Crama’ means wine cellar, and in Sibiu it is a nice pub were young people, mostly students, come together, chat and drink a bit. ‘Silva Black’, a really good black beer is my favorite one, but you can also get tasty hot wine and bread with a kind of sour cream. Really delicious and not that expensive at all.
Sunday was free (that means no free time activity at all except drinking a coffee with Simone and Cipi), and so I tried to improve my knowledge in Romanian language a bit. Unfortunately I didn’t do that much within the last weeks, so it’s becoming more and more important. On Saturday we visited a city that is recommended in a lot of travel guides: Sighisoara (German: Schaessburg). It is not far away from Sibiu, but distance in Romania is relative, especially if you are traveling with a very slow ‘Personal’. So we (Alina, Horia, Simone and I) sat in the train early in the morning, looked out at the beautiful Romanian landscape, passed meadows, some farmer houses, fields… and Copsa Mica. I think sometimes it has to be mentioned that Romania doesn’t have only beautiful sides. And during communism, this industrial area near the city polluted nature for a long time in future. What was exactly produced I really don’t know – non-ferrous metal, caoutchouc, or – according to Wikipedia – also carbon black. So this area is probably one of the most polluted in Romania or even in Europe. Simone and I were amazed how ugly and unreal the surrounding looked like. Old, not working heavy machines, mouldered factories – also the roofs of the houses in the nearer surrounding were totally black, and the few trees on the small hills looked not very healthy. We were wondering why people are still living there, the soil and the ground water were contaminated for sure, and the population still today suffers from illnesses caused by the pollution.
After that experience we finally arrived Medias. Rares was born in this city, and it is called the ‘small Sibiu’. A lot of things remind you on Hermannstadt, like the parts of the defence walls, towers and also the evangelic church. After we waited a bit in Medias, our train to Sighisoara arrived and we visited the small town. Not more than 30.000 people live there, and because it was winter and the days around the turn of the year were over, we fortunately didn’t see that many tourists. The town is very medieval, narrow lanes, the clock tower with his figures and also – of course – the house where the father of Dracula lived for some years: a nice atmosphere at all, and also the history museum was very nice. Sighisoara shall be better, I was told, when it is summer – also because of a music festival. People rest beside the river, there shall be a lively atmosphere and of course much more green. But nevertheless, it was a nice trip. Especially when you are sitting in a restaurant and nothing reminds you on Romania: if you are looking out of the window and two wooden vehicles, pulled buy horses and loaded with wood, are passing, you realize that you still are in this fascinating country. And that you still have at least a bit of time until your stay will end.
