Copsa Mica

Ich wage es ja gar nicht zu sagen – aber das Thema „Copsa Mica“ hat Simone und mich einfach nicht losgelassen. Und so sind wir dann auch am Sonntag todesmutig und verwegen in den Zug gestiegen und haben uns nochmal nach Kleinkoppisch gewagt, diesmal mit dem Plan, sich das ganze einmal aus der Nähe und nicht nur aus dem Zugfenster anzugucken. Alle Leute, denen wir das erzählt haben, waren ziemlich erstaunt und vielleicht auch etwas verbittert, dass wir ausgerechnet wegen einer Industrieruine eine ganzen Nachmittag verplanen.
Nun gut, jedensfall sind einige Bilder im Kasten und vielleicht schaffe ich es noch, ein paar von Ihnen zu veröffentlichen. Eine griechische Firma betreibt noch einen Teil des Werkes, der Rest ist einfach nur Ruine. Aber sowas von Ruine, das hat es glaube ich auch in der DDR kaum gegeben. Alles, was irgendwie noch brauchbar war, wurde abmontiert. Anders kann man sich auch den Verfall gar nicht erklären, wenn man sich noch dazu überlegt, dass bis 1993 produziert wurde. Und es gibt auch bis jetzt keinerlei Pläne, das Gelände zu rekultivieren bzw. die verfallenen Gebäude einfach abzureißen. Das danebengelegene Dorf/die kleine Stadt sieht eigentlich ganz normal rumänisch aus, viele Dächer sind eben nur schwarz vom Ruß. Es gibt eine hohe Arbeitslosigkeit, und natürlich langfristige Gesundheitsschäden bei vielen in der Bevölkerung. Irgendwie war gar nichts los am Sonntag Nachmittag, das einzig verwunderliche ist eben der Blick auf die Ruine aus dem eigenen Vorgarten. Es gibt auch noch einige interessante Artikel im Netz, einer davon ist hier zu finden.
Von einer schlechten Seite kann man gleich zur nächsten in Rumänien springen: Korruption. Immer noch ein größeres Problem, und ich habe persönlich nicht allzuviel davon mitbekommen, zum Glück. Gerade im Gesundheitswesen, teilweise natürlich auch in Behörden und staatlichen Einrichtungen, gerade aber in hohen politischen Kreisen soll es vorkommen, dass bestehendes Recht einfach nicht angewandt wird. Und man schätzt die Situation einfach nur verbittert ein, wenn man sieht, dass Geld, was eigentlich für Infrastruktur bzw. staatliche Investitionen vorhanden ist, nicht der Bevölkerung zugute kommt, sondern den Konten von wichtigen Entscheidungsträgern. Ein bisschen wütend bin ich nur gewesen, als die Leiterin des Sprachkurses (der hat mittlerweile wieder angefangen) erzählte, dass Sie für Ihre Tätigkeit immer noch nicht bezahlt wurde. Das Geld hatten ich und auch andere allerdings bereits im Dezember bezahlt, keine Ahnung ob und wofür es bereits verwendet wurde.
Im Allgemeinen setzt man aber deswegen auch große Hoffnungen auf den Beitritt zur EU – dass entsprechende Richtlinien, sei es im juristischen, ökonomischen oder ökologischen Bereich, schlicht und ergreifend angewandt werden und auch dadurch ein beschleunigter Prozess der Entwicklung in jeglicher Hinsicht einsetzt. Dieser Argumentation ist sowohl aus rumänischer als auch aus deutscher/europäischer Sicht eigentlich wenig entgegenzusetzen.
Rares hat sich überraschenderweise den deutschen Spielfilm „Der Untergang“ (mit Bruno Ganz als Hitler in der Hauptrolle) zweimal angeschaut. Das Dumme war nur, dass es die DVD-Macher nicht hingekriegt haben, dass man sich zumindest in irgendeiner Form englische Untertitel einblenden lassen kann. Deswegen hab ich versucht, so gut wie möglich die wichtigsten Gespräche zu übersetzen. Und dolmetschen kann über fast drei Stunden ziemlich anstrengend sein.
Nach ganz langer Zeit hab ich auch mal wieder Sport gemacht: Volleyball am Freitag, Fußball am Samstag. Fühle mich danach komischerweise immer ein paar Jahre älter... Und irgendwie sind die Rumänen, jedenfalls mit denen ich spiele, sehr impulsiv, insbesondere wenn es um das Kommentieren von strittigen Szenen geht. In diesen Situationen bin ich sogar ganz froh, nicht alles bis gar nichts verstehen zu können.

I’m a bit scared to admit it – but the issue „Copsa Mica“ stayed in the mind of Simone and me, and so wie decided to face the challenge again and took a train to Copsa Mica on Sunday. We just wanted to have a detailed look at the industrial area, also the goal was to take some pictures (of course) – really, we were just curious :-) Some Romanian people that heared about our plan where, how shall I say it, at least a bit surprised. Of course they advised us to go to some nicer places, but that was not the point. It was just this strange atmosphere we want to experience – a really nice sorrounding, but destroyed because of the huge (ex-)plant.
Perhaps I’ll be able to present some pictures soon, because they show what the plans of a communistic dictator are good for. In my opinion and in this case at least not for prospering landscapes. Anyway, a small part of the former plant is still working, a greek company cares about the production of non-ferrous metals. The rest is a huge ruin. And such a ruin I haven’t seen before, also I think even in former GDR or shortly after German reunification you wouldn’t find such a scenario. In a way it’s difficult to imagine that until 1993 production was still running, because everything looks incredible old and mouldered. Everything what could be used after the closing of the grime production was dismantled and brought to other places in the country, so you partly see just skeletons of steel or hills of scrap metal, but also reactors and chimneys that aren’t used anymore. There are also no plans to bulldoze the area or to recultivate it – so for the next years probably everything will stay the same. The village alternatively the small town actually looks quite normal. Nothing special so far, except that you have this strange situation to look at the ruins if you are in your own backyard. Of course, there is a high unemployment rate and also long-term consequences for the health of the inhabitants. From one bad side of Romania to another: corruption. Personally I had the feeling not to be affected at all besides one exception: Our teacher at language classes at university isn’t payed yet, although some of the attendants (including me) payed our fee already in December. I really don’t know if the money was spent already, and if yes, for which purpose. Some people also told me that you find situations in which you only get services if you can pay for them, also they actually should be for free. Public hospitals are one good example, but also the administration and unfortunatelely politicians on high level shall not respect law and act in a way which is advantageous for them, but not for the majority of the population. I myself recognised the problem only slowly; you just have to see the need for investments and then to think about the possibility that not every leu, euro or dollar is used for it’s original purpose. And of course it would make sense – if you see it from this point of view – that Romania joins the European Union, because then the state has to respect the main principles and guidelines e.g. of the European Comission, no matter if they are connected with law, economy or ecology. This is the hope especially of the young generation, although some people I spoke with think that it’s to early for Romania to become a member of EU already now.
Surprisingly Rares watched the German Movie (‘Der Untergang’, a film about the last 10 days of Hitler’s life with Bruno Ganz as the leading actor) twice. I still don’t know why I couldn’t find a version with Englisch subtitles in different shops, and so I translated the main dialogs to him. It’s really exhausting if you do this for almost three hours, but also a good exercise to practise your English. My vocabulary is really weak, I have to admit it.
