Der zweite Eindruck - the second impression

Rückblick, zweiter Oktober. Ich wache auf und sehe Rumänien das erste Mal bei Tag. Das wahre Rumänien, ungeschminkt, echt. Wobei ich mir nicht sicher bin, ob man Sibiu ohne Weiteres mit ganz Rumänien gleichsetzen kann. Auf mich macht die Stadt, zumindest deren Wohngebiete, einen ärmeren Eindruck, als ich es erwartet habe. Die Häuser sind grau oder haben blasse Farben, die Straßen sind staubig, die Mülltonnen überfüllt. Für mich das Schlimmste: die Hunde, die herrenlos herumlaufen. Gegen diese Tierart habe ich ja seit meiner Kindheit eine gewisse Abneigung. Vielleicht nicht mehr, wenn ich zurückkomme.
Mein erster Gastgeber bietet mir zu Essen an, obwohl sein Kühlschrank fast leer ist und er selbst nur sehr wenig zu sich nimmt. Das erste Mal Geld wechseln; ein Euro entspricht an diesem Tag ca. 3,45 RON (neuer rumänischer Leu). Danach holen mich Alexandra (aus Rumänien) und Geir (aus Norwegen) ab und zeigen mir die Innenstadt. Beide sprechen perfekt deutsch, in Deutschland haben sie sich auch kennen gelernt. Die Führung dauert länger als erwartet, weil die Stadt viel zu bieten hat (www.sibiu.ro): Kirchen, Museen, Kulturstätten - verbunden mit einer langen deutschen Vergangenheit. Sibiu (auch Hermmannstadt) ist 2007 gemeinsam mit Luxemburg Kulturstadt Europas. Deswegen gibt es viele Baustellen. wir brauchen über zwei Stunden und setzen uns am Ende in ein Café. Danke euch beiden Stadtführern :-)
Danach holt mich Rares ab und zeigt mir meine neue Unterkunft: Ich wohne mit ihm und einem weiteren Rumänen in einem 3-Zimmer-Appartment, natürlich nicht deutscher Standard. Es muss noch gestrichen werden; das übernimmt der Vermieter. Morgen ist mein erster Tag auf Arbeit.

Review, October 2nd. I wake up and see Romania the first time by day. The true Romania, unflattering, authentic. I´m not sure yet if you can compare Sibiu with Romania in general. The town, mainly buildings where normal working people live, makes on me a worse impression than I expected. Houses are mealy, streets are dusty and in a bad condition, garbage cans are overcrowded. One more thing to mention: dogs. I really don´t like them, and they´re roaming around, searching for food. We'll see how this relationship will develop ;-)
My first host offers me food, even his fridge is almost empty and he himself hasn`t that much to eat. I change money for the first time; one Euro is about 3,45 new Romanian Lei (RON) today. After that a girl from Romania (Alexandra) and a guy from Norway (Geir) pick me up and show me the city center of Sibiu. Both speak German in a perfect way, they met in Germany during their internships and now live in Sibiu. The guidance tour takes longer than I expected, because you can see a lot of interesting places and buildings. By the way, Sibiu (www.sibiu.ro) is going to be - together with Luxemburg - the cultural city of Europe in 2007. That´s the reason why you see a lot of construction sites. After we finished the round trip we search a café and relax a bit. Thanks a lot to both cityguides :-)
In the evening I follow Rares to my appartment, I´ll live togther with him and another Romanian guy in an apartment a few kilometres away from the city center, but that´s o.k. because I don`t have to walk a long distance to work. Of course the flat isn´t as comfortable as in Germany, but on the other hand I´m relatively frugal. Some painting work has to be done, but the hirer will do it himself within the next days. Tomorrow is my first day at the company.
